'Special' EI benefits for self-employed to begin in 2011

'Vancouver: A Poem'

Something unusual both happened and didn't happen last year in the poetry sector of the British Columbian and, by extension, Canadian literary world. The unusual thing that happened is that well-known Vancouver poet George Stanley published the first (as far as I know) book-length poem about the city of Vancouver. It's called, appropriately enough, Vancouver: A Poem.

Why Canada's employment insurance system is so foolish

One of the silliest programs that we have in Canada is employment insurance.
It’s foolish for any number of reasons. Everyone who’s on someone else’s payroll has to pay into it, yet only half of the country’s unemployed are eligible to receive benefits. So it’s inherently unfair on that front. "Half"? It's more like 4 out of 10 don't qualify.
